The Self States Sequential Diagram (SSSD) is a tool developed by Ryle (Ryle, 1990, Beard, Marlowe & Ryle, 1990) as part of the technique of reformulation in cognitive analytic therapy. Patient and therapist collaborate to describe the patient's problematic patterns of relating to others and the self and use the resulting diagram to aid recognition and revision of these patterns in the patient's everyday life and within the therapeutic relationship. We report on the accuracy of this diagrammatic description by validating one patient's SSSD using the Core Conflictual Relationship Theme Method (CCRT; Luborsky & Crits-Christoph 1990) and Structural Analysis of Social Behaviour-Cyclic Maladaptive Pattern (SASB-CMP; Benjamin, 1974, 1987; Benjamin, Foster, Roberto & Estroff, 1986; Schacht & Henry, 1994). This comparison supports the view that it is possible for the therapist to create a descriptive diagram which is a valid representation of recurrent relationship patterns.
